Well, the day after I was introduced to the possibilities of the Web, 3 years ago, I began typing HTML code. In a "bare" text editor. The following animation is a good summary of this process...

Not very efficient, huh ?
I was sure there was a better way to do this. So I tried plenty of HTML editing tools,
from the simple "HTML Assistant" to the bulky "FrontPage" (erk!). All the
softwares I evaluated were too "freedom-killing" (preventing me from doing I wanted,
even if it was HTML compliant), incredibly unefficient (>1KB of HTML code
just to write "Hello" on a page) and so on.
The best editor I used was
SoftQuad's HoTMetaL 2.0,
but this version is outdated and of course does only support few of today's new tags. The
upgrade is somewhat costly for my personal use (<1 page/month).
Netscape Navigator Gold is cool too, but it's too WYSIWYG
for me, I'd like to "see" most HTML tags.
So what ? I returned to my friendly text editor, IMHO the best HTML editing tool ever. It offers a perfect control of the code describing each page, it allows you to do anything you want, it works on every platform I know and it is free.
