"120 Million Landmines Deployed Worldwide: Fact or Fiction?", Ilaria Bottigliero for the Pro Victimis Foundation, published by Leo Cooper (an imprint of Pen & Sword Books Ltd, online at http://www.yorkshire-web.co.uk/ps/), Barnsley, South Yorkshire, S70 2AS, Great Britain, 2000, 123 pp., ISBN 0-85052-731-7.
(from the Executive Summary)"... Unfortunately, for a variety of technical, political and economic reasons, the most well known estimates of 110-120 million landmines deployed and 100 million stockpiled are, in all probability, gross exaggerations. This figure, seemingly based on considerations far distant from factual, credible evidence, likely does more harm than good. If it really should take 1,100 years to clear only the number of mines presently deployed at a cost of some US$ 33 billion, the task would be next to impossible and politicaly unfeasible.
Fortunately, on the basis of the results of over a decade of mine-clearance operations in the field, it appears that the landmine problem may not be as monumental and practically intractable as expected, but on the contrary, amenable to realistic, medium-term and affordable solutions. ..."
